[영어인터뷰특강 5](필수질문 5)#2. 장단점 영어대답하기

오늘은 영어 인터뷰 할 때 꼭 받는 필수 질문 중 두 번째 자신의 장단점에 대해 영어로 말하는 방법을 살펴 보겠다.

지난번 글을 살펴보면 두 번의 글을 통해 ‘자기소개’를 영어로 하는 순서 및 영어 사용 방법에 대해 기본적인 설명이 있다.

앞 강의를 놓친 친구들은 ‘자기소개’에 관한 글을 먼저 살펴보고 나서 이번 ‘장단점’ 말하기 연습을 하기 바란다.

그리고 잊지 말 것은,

 

반드시 ‘나만의 언어’로, ‘나만의 표현방식’으로 꼭 정리해 두어야만

 

실제 면접장에서 영어로 인터뷰 하는 질문에 자연스럽게 바로 영어 대답이 흘러 나온다는 것이다.

 

 

아래 ‘5가지 필수 질문’은 각각의 질문에 대해 적어도 5문장씩 말할 수 있어야 어느 회사를 가더라도 합격할 수 있다.

 

1. 자신에 대해 말해 보세요

2. 자신의 장단점은 무엇인가요?

3. 우리 회사가 당신을 채용해야 하는 이유는 무엇입니까?

4. 저희 회사에 지원한 동기를 말씀해 주십시오.

5. 목표나 포부를 말씀해 주세요.

영어인터뷰: 장단점

 

 

Question2. 자신의 장단점은 무엇인가요?

 

 

“What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

What do you consider to be your strong assets or points?

What are your weaknesses in relation to this job?

What area of your personality or capabilities would you like to improve?

 

 

이 질문에 꼭 포함되어야 하는 내용 5가지:

 

장점을 말할 때:

장점1. 전문적인 지식이나 경험

장점2. 일에 꼭 필요한 기술이나 능력

장점3. 성격과 적성

 

단점을 말할 때:

단점1. 심각하지 않은 단점이나 장점이 될 수도 있는 단점

단점2. 단점을 보완하려는 노력

 

 

인터뷰를 할 때는 항상 장점을 먼저 자신 있게 말하도록 하자.

그리고 단점을 말한다.

명심할 것은 단점을 말할 때는 심각한 단점을 말하는 것은 면접장에서는 좋지 않다.

별로 심각하지 않은 단점을 말하는 것이 좋은 결과에 도움이 된다.

어쩌면 누군가 에게는 장점일수도 있는 뭔가 단점 같지 않은 느낌도 주는(?) 그런 단점이면 좋겠다.

 

“저는 너무 낙천적인게 단점이라면 단점입니다.”

“저는 집중할 때 지나치게 몰입하는 면이 있어 이것이 단점이라면 단점입니다.”

 

 

이 정도면 단점도 왠지 좋아 보이지 않는가?

본인의 심각하지 않은 단점을 한 두개 정도 미리 생각해 두자.

그리고 장점은 최대한 확대하자.

허풍이나 거짓은 말하지 말고 진짜 본인의 장점을 자신감 있게 머뭇거리지 말고 당당히 언급하도록 한다.

 

영어에 ‘clarity’라는 단어가 있다.

개인적으로 아주 좋아하는 단어 중 하나인데,

우리 말로 ‘명확, 선명, 분명, 명료함’ 등의 의미를 나타낸다.

뭔가 이런 사람이 개인적으로는 좋은 것 같다.

 

면접실에서는 꼭 필요한 단어이다.

 

순간의 머뭇거리는 모습은 자신감과 바로 연결되며 그와 관련한 모습으로 비춰진다.

짧더라도 자신감 있게 본인에 관해 이야기 하는 모습은 항상 긍정적으로 보인다.

 

물론 대답할 때 ‘Eye Contact’도 잊지 말자.

 

시선이 허공이나 사선으로 가 있거나 곁눈질 하게 되면

신뢰감이 없어 보인다.

담담하게 면접관을 Eye Contact 하면서 본인에 관한 이야기를 하자.

 

 

이제부터 영어로 장점, 단점을 대답하는 방법을 살펴 보도록 하자.

★장점을 말할 때:

 

 

장점1. What are your strengths and weaknesses? 전문지식, 경험 장점

 

과거 경험이나 업무를 통한 전문지식 사용 했는지 설명한다

경험이 없으면 비슷한 경험을 떠올려 그 경험으로 장점으로 부각해 본다.

‘경험이 없다’가 아니라 ‘비슷한 경험을 해보았다’라는 식으로 얘기를 해야 한다.

 

 

장점1. 영어표현

I have a B.A. degree in public relations and I took economics.

저는 홍보학 학위를 가지고 있으며 경제학 수업을 들었습니다.

 

My real strengths lie in my knowledge and understanding of computers and information systems.

저의 장점은 컴퓨터 및 정보 시스템 관련 지식과 능력입니다.

 

I have been in the banking industry for 3 years.

저는 3년동안 금융업에 종사했습니다.

 

In my previous job, I mainly handled customer complaints.

이전 직장에서 주로 고객불만 관련 업무를 처리했습니다.

~학위를 가지고 있으며, ~ 수업을 수강하였습니다.

I have a B.S. degree in logistics and I took marketing.

I have a B.A. degree in public relations and I took some graduate courses as well.

 

~과정을 이수하였으며, ~자격증도 갖고 있습니다.

I completed courses in accounting and statistics and also possess a professional license in asset management.

I completed courses in real estate and also possess a professional license in real estate transaction.

I completed courses in microeconomics and also have a license in information processing.

 

저의 장점은 ~에 있습니다.

My real strengths lie in my knowledge and understanding of computers and information systems.

My real strengths lie in my educational background in media and communication

My key strengths are my study in computer science and hands-on experiences in Web development.

My key strengths are my educational background in the Chinese language and business administration and practical experience in the Chinese market.

 

~업(종)에 ~동안 종사했습니다.

I have been in the banking industry for 3 years

I have been in the educational field for 2 years.

I have been writing for the school newspaper during the university life.

I have been organizing women’s rights movement at the YWCA for many years.

 

~업무를 (주로) 담당했습니다.

In my previous job, I mainly handled customer complaints.

Participating in club activities, I administered budgets and expenses.

I took care of teaching students, researching teaching materials, and consulting.

 

~로 일하면서 ~ 분야의 세계를 접해 보았습니다.

I was exposed to the world of accounting as an intern last summer.

I was exposed to the world of health care industry as a volunteer at a hospital two years ago.

팀웍이나 의사소통 능력과 같은 보편적인 소양도 채용 시 중요 요인으로 작용할 수 있다.

지원분야에서 성공할 수 있는 적성을 가지고 있는지 검토하고 강조한다.

저는 책임감이 강합니다.

 

I like to think of new ideas.

저는 새로운 아이디어를 잘 생각해 냅니다.

★단점을 말할 때:

 

 

 

단점1. What are your strengths and weaknesses? 심각하지 않은 단점

 

아무래도 단점이 부각되면 면접관은 지원자의 능력이 뛰어나더라도 채용여부를 다시 한번 고려하게 될 수도 있다.

장점은 부각시키고 단점은 약화시키도록 하는 대답을 하도록 하자.

저는 약간 보수적인 측면이 있는 것 같습니다.

저는 약간 직설적인 면이 있는 것 같습니다.
(우유부단하지 않음)

My weakness is that I am a little absent-minded.

My biggest weakness is that I am a little too laid-back(*낙천적인)

 

~하는 경향이 있습니다.

I tend to try to be friends with everyone.

I tend to get engrossed in what I like to do (*get engrossed in~몰두하다)

I tend to be overly concerned when making a decision (*지나치게 걱정하는)

 

~라는 점을 인정하지 않을 수가 없네요.

I must admit that I am a bit of workaholic.

I must admit that I have to work on being more decisive.

I do admit that I have to improve my spoken English.

 

~말씀드리기 좀 그렇습니다만, ~입니다.

I am afraid that I am a bit straightforward.

I am afraid that I don’t have experience directly related to doing this job.

단점2. What are your strengths and weaknesses? 단점 보완 노력

 

단점을 개선하려는 의지와 노력이 보이면 그 단점을 더 이상 크다고 할 수 없다. 따라서, 면접관들이 단점에 관한 질문을 할 때 귀를 기울여 듣는 부분이기도 하다. 자신의 단점을 언급하고 이에 대한 적극적인 개선노력을 보여주어야 한다.

I am a perfectionist but I have been trying to be generous to others lately.

저는 완벽주의자입니다. 하지만 최근에 다른 사람들에게 관대해지려고 노력하고 있습니다.

 

I consciously try to see the bigger picture while paying attention to small details.

저는 사소한 것에 신경 쓰는 측면이 있지만, 동시에 보다 큰 측면도 놓치지 않기 위해 의식적으로 노력하고 있습니다.

 

I have become used to studying English every morning for 20 minutes.

저는 매일 아침 20분동안 영어 공부를 하는 것이 습관이 되어 있습니다.

(*이게 단점이 되나?)

 

I will make an effort to learn Excel immediately, if needed.

저는 필요하다면 지금이라도 당장 엑셀을 배우기 위해 노력을 기울일 것입니다.

 

I am expecting to expand my English conversational ability by attending early morning classes.

저는 새벽 강의를 듣고 영어 회화 능력을 키우기를 바라고 있습니다.

I have been trying to study English, so I believe my English will improve soon.

Whenever I have some worries, I try my best to focus on my work or studies.

I will make an effort to obtain the required knowledge if I am granted with this work.
